PA School Interview Tips and Questions

Congratulations! You’ve taken the first step towards your dream of becoming a Physician Assistant by submitting your applications.

Now that you’ve entered the interview phase, it’s time to put on your interview-prep hat and get ready to shine. Just like a medical diagnosis, successful interviewing requires careful preparation, thoughtful responses, and a touch of confidence.

In this blog, we’ll guide you through the essential steps to rock your PA school interview and increase your chances of securing that coveted acceptance letter.

The PA School Interview Dance: Practice Makes Perfect

Picture this: you’re walking into a room filled with potential colleagues, and the spotlight is on you. The interview is a dance between showcasing your personality, experiences, and potential as a Physician Associate student.

Even if you’re not a natural interviewer, don’t worry – practice is your secret weapon. Rehearse your responses to common questions with a friend, family member, or even in front of a mirror.

This will help you feel more comfortable and confident when facing the real deal.

PA School Interview: Expect the Unexpected

Interviews are like blind dates. Sometimes, what looks great on paper might not click in person, or it could exceed your expectations. Embrace the unknown and prepare for both scenarios.

Just remember, whether you match perfectly or not, each interview is a learning experience that will help you improve for the next one.

Ultimately, your essay needs to reflect who you are on paper and match your personality in person.

Embrace the Waitlist: It's Not a Rejection

The waitlist can feel like a gray area, but it’s actually a sign that the admissions committee sees potential in you. Schools use waitlists to ensure they fill their cohort with the best candidates.

If you’re waitlisted, it’s not because you’re a second choice – it’s because you’re a strong contender. Also, if you need to reapply because they did not accept you it’s ok. Multiple people have applied more than once and have gotten into PA school.

So, keep the faith and stay proactive in your pursuit of acceptance.

Mastering the Art of Common PA School Interview Questions:

Now, let’s tackle the questions that interviewers love to ask. By having well-thought-out responses, you’ll be ready to impress and stand out from the crowd:

  1. Why this PA Program?: Research the program thoroughly and highlight specific aspects that resonate with you. Is it the faculty, the curriculum, or the emphasis on clinical experience? Make your answer personal and genuine.

  2. PA vs. NP vs. MD: Understand the unique roles of each profession and why the PA path aligns with your goals. Show your awareness of the distinctive contributions PAs make to the healthcare team.
  3. PA Profession’s History: Brush up on the origin of the Physician Associate (aka Physician Assistant) profession and its evolution. This demonstrates your dedication to becoming a knowledgeable and engaged PA student.

  4. Financial Preparedness: Be transparent about your financial plan for school. Whether it’s scholarships, loans, or personal savings, your responsible approach reflects your commitment.

  5. Strengths and Fixable Weaknesses: Showcase your strengths, but don’t shy away from discussing areas you’re working to improve. Emphasize how you’re actively addressing these challenges.

  6. Dealing with Difficult Situations: Describe a scenario where you managed a challenging situation or patient effectively. Highlight your problem-solving skills and empathy.

  7. Addressing Low Grades: If asked about a low grade, explain the circumstances that led to it and how you’ve learned and grown from the experience.

  8. Facing PA Challenges: Demonstrate your awareness of the current issues facing PAs, such as scope of practice, physician collaboration, or healthcare disparities.

  9. Ethical Dilemmas with Supervising Physicians: Show your ethical compass by explaining how you would handle a situation where a physician’s request contradicts ethical or medical guidelines. Your answer must be between 250 to 1000 words, but I recommend between 300-700 words. A 1000 words are too long. Your explanation should be concise and thorough.

Example of Ethical PA Interview Question:
  • What would you do if your friend called to admit he/she was drunk, hit a pedestrian last night, and left the scene?

Preparing for your PA school interview can be nerve-wracking, but with the right mindset and adequate preparation, you’ll breeze through it with confidence.

Remember, this interview is your chance to shine and let your unique qualities as a future Physician Associate shine through. Embrace the opportunity, be genuine, and stay true to your passion for medicine.

Whether you end up exceeding expectations or learning from each experience, your journey toward becoming a Physician Associates is well underway.

Good luck, future Physician Associates – you’ve got this!

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE…INTERVIEWING!
